Joan Ribera grew up building dry stone walls with his father in Sagunto. Ingrid Halvorsen came from Bergen to study the gardens of the Alhambra and stayed.

They met on a terrace in Altea in 2009, rebuilding a garden that had been planted like a lawn in England and was dying every August. Two years later they started Aubergine with one van and a simple idea: gardens on this coast should be planted for the sun, the wind and the water they actually get.

Today the company designs, builds and looks after gardens from Sagunto to Dénia. Most of the people who built the first gardens still work here, and many of those gardens are still in our care.

How we garden

Four things every garden has in common, whatever its size.

  • 60%

    Less water

Dry planting and drip lines use less than half the water of a lawn garden the same size, measured on our care gardens.

  • 80%

    Grown nearby

Most plants come from nurseries within 150 km, already used to the soil, the salt and the August heat.

  • 100 km

    Local stone

Walls, steps and gravel from quarries in the region, so new work sits with the old terraces around it.

  • 0

    Waste to landfill

Green waste is composted, soil is kept on site and old stone goes back into the next wall.
