The garden
The field had been ploughed for decades and left bare after the last almond trees came out. The owners wanted it green without a lawn and without a hose.
We rested the ground for a summer, cleared the weeds twice, and sowed a mix of 24 native species in October, after the first rain. The old carob was lifted and thinned so the meadow could grow right up to its trunk.
Each July we cut the meadow, leave the hay for a week to drop its seed, then rake it off. That is the whole upkeep.
Before and after
Taken from the same corner of the garden, the week we started and the summer after.

They kept the old carob and let the meadow grow right up to it. It feels like the field was always this way.
