Terrace with an olive tree in a terracotta pot, lavender beds and a pergola

The garden

The yard was a slab of concrete poured in the seventies, with no soil, no shade and a drain that flooded every September. The owners wanted somewhere to eat outside and a view from the kitchen that was not a wall.

We broke out two thirds of the slab, kept the rest as a terrace and laid reclaimed stone over it. A raised bed of local limestone holds the lavender and rosemary, and a chestnut pergola carries a jasmine that now covers half the wall.

The olive came from a grower in Llíria and sits in a pot large enough to move, because the owners rent and may take it with them.

Before and after

Taken from the same corner of the garden, the week we started and the summer after.

Cracked concrete yard with weeds, broken pots and a plastic chair
Before
Terrace with an olive tree in a terracotta pot, lavender beds and a pergola
After, October 2024
  • Lavender and rosemary planted along a low stone edge
  • Dry stone wall built from reclaimed blocks
  • Drip line running under young planting
Our terrace was a slab of hot concrete. Now we eat out there from March to November, under the olive they planted.
