The garden
The lawn had been watered every evening for thirty years and still turned yellow by July. The owners wanted a garden that looked settled the first summer and asked less of them and of the well.
We kept the four old olives, added eleven more in loose groves and laid a path of local stone from the house to the pool. The beds are mulched with gravel, planted with lavender, cistus and grasses, and fed by a drip system on a soil sensor.
At the far end, where the lawn was worst, we sowed a meadow that is cut once a year in July.
Before and after
Taken from the same corner of the garden, the week we started and the summer after.

We asked for a garden that would still look good when we are eighty. Ingrid drew one that will look better.
